EIA releases are foundational to oil-instrument trading and to oil-correlated FX strategies. The weekly cadence and predictable timing make them easy to filter around; their materiality makes filtering essential.

EIA release structure:

• **Wednesday 14:30 UTC**: official release of US crude oil, gasoline, and distillate inventory data • **Pre-release positioning**: analysts and traders publish forecasts; pre-release prices reflect consensus expectations • **Surprise vs expectation**: market reaction depends on actual vs forecast inventory change; large surprises produce large immediate moves • **Follow-through**: initial reaction often extends for 60-120 minutes as market digests implications; later moves can reverse initial direction

Typical impact on instruments:

• **WTI Crude**: immediate 2-5% move on consensus surprises, 8-10% on large surprises; spread widening to 2-3× normal during the release window • **Brent Crude**: similar percentage move as WTI; tighter spreads typical • **USD/CAD**: 30-80 pip move correlated with oil direction; weaker oil = stronger USD/CAD (CAD weakening with oil weakness) • **NOK pairs (USD/NOK, EUR/NOK)**: significant moves on oil reaction; NOK is heavily oil-correlated • **Energy stocks**: tradeable correlation for traders running cross-asset strategies
